childlike faith

before i go to bed
instead of kneeling with folded hands
i pick up the baby monitor
and kiss the screen 

my sacred rituals
have changed over time
every sunday i pass
macaroni and cheese communion
and give a play doh offering 

my pastor
is a four year old
who teaches me that god
laughs at spiders and butterflies
and likes peanut butter sandwiches without jelly

we sing the hymns of cartoon tigers
and ice queens and magic carpets
and learn the commandments of
kindness
patience
using words
using napkins
using soap

now
holiness is
finding stickers in the washer
reading ancient texts about bears
meditating to rhymes and youtube 

and i have no doubt
it will be 
the little children
who inherit heaven
because i’m pretty sure
god is a toddler
in a princess dress
